Making sense of old handwriting

Dictionaries

Here you will find a set of dictionaries to help you in deciphering and translating words that can sometimes be archaic and difficult to find in a modern dictionary.

Here is also a full modern dictionary (in Romanian) of the language: Dictionar Latin Roman. Humantitas Bucuresti, 2007. https://archive.org/details/Dictionar-Latin-Roman/page/n1/mode/2up

In addition, here is an English-Romanian Dictionary: Schönkron, Marcel. Romanian-English English-Romanian Dictionary. New York: Hippocrene Books, 1991. https://archive.org/details/romanianenglishe00sch/page/n5/mode/2up

For older Cyrillic writings, here is a table to transcribe the sounds into modern Romanian provided by the Library of Congress: https://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/romanian.pdf
. With old writing, generally the best practice is first to transcribe

As well as Romanian, being familiar with old church Slavonic language and style can be useful the further back you go in records. The University of Pennsylvania has a database with dictionaries and resources for researching and understanding old Slavonic that can be found here: https://guides.library.upenn.edu/c.php?g=1116153&p=8138799

Another useful work in understanding Slavonic can be found here: Blumenfield, Lev, trans. Old Church Slavic - Grammar and Dictionaries. Firenze University Press, 2023. https://archive.org/details/oapen-20.500.12657-74795/page/n3/mode/2up
