German Genealogical Glossary

A historical German dictionary is a necessity when working in old German documents. FamilySearch Wiki has a good online vocabulary list, and is helpful in general, but will not be useful in all situations. The recommended German genealogical dictionaries are:

• Adler’s German and English Dictionary by George J. Adler
  • Written in 1879, this dictionary is only available used and in book format. Search for it by name online to find a used copy.
  • This is a very extensive dictionary and is too large to take into an archive.
• German English Genealogical Dictionary by Ernest Thode
  • Available in book format or online here.
• For abbreviations, used this website: Europäische Stammtafeln by John P. DuLong, Ph.D.
