Marriage Civil Registration Records


A Spanish marriage entry contains the given names and surnames of the bride and groom, with an indication of their marital status, domicile, nationality, age, and place of birth. In some cases, the date of birth is also given. The given names and surnames of the parents of both bride and groom, and the naturaleza (birthplace) of those parents, will be given. The entire act will be dated and signed by witnesses named in the entry.

The following is a sample marriage record created by the Civil Registration Offices in Lima, Peru in 1903. The information has been recorded into a printed form. Below the image of the document, you will find the transcription and the translation of the record.

testigos quedando archivado en esta Oficina el expediente seguido por dichos

23rd, 1897, after questioning the already named parties separately and after
reading articles 132 , 134 , 173 , 174 , 175 , 176 , and 177 , of the Civil Code, declared,
using words prescribed by law, that they had been married, and to conclude, ordered the 
undersigned, Director of the Section mentioned above, to issue the present act as proof
of the marriage contract entered into by the said Mister Mayor, the spouses and the
witnesses remaining archived in this Office the file opened by the said
